Christianshavn is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Copenhagen: beautiful canals, houseboats, cafés and colorful streets that make every walk feel relaxing and cozy. Here’s my local guide to the best things to do in Christianshavn, from climbing a golden spiral tower to coffee on the water.
1.
Climb the Church of Our Saviour’s Spiral Tower
The golden, twisting spire of the Church of Our Saviour (Vor Frelsers Kirke) appears in many photos of Copenhagen, and it’s in Christianshavn. The tower has one of the best views in the city, and climbing the historic staircases inside and outside is a unique experience.

2.
Stroll Along the Canals and Spot the Colorful Boats
Wander the canal paths of Christianshavn and look at the many different boats, some of which are people’s homes. As a local, I love the peaceful, photogenic walks here, with a coffee or a meal at one of the many cozy cafés and restaurants nearby.

3.
Grab a Bite at Broens Street Food
Broens Street Food is right on the waterfront, a perfect spot for a quick bite or a cold drink while watching the boats go by. The market has a great selection of international food alongside Danish classics like hot dogs and open-faced sandwiches (smørrebrød). The area is especially lively in summer with fun events, such as outdoor dance classes.
How to get there: From downtown Copenhagen, walk across the Inderhavnsbroen bridge at the end of Nyhavn.

4.
Explore the Colorful Buildings
Discover the neighborhood’s charm on the streets lined with cozy old, colorful buildings. Wildersgade, Sankt Annæ Gade, and Overgaden Neden Vandet are especially good streets for photos.

5.
Eat Waterside at Christianshavns Boat Rental & Café
Dining by the water is a must in Copenhagen, especially on a sunny day. This cozy boat rental café sits right on the canal, and watching the boats and kayaks pass while you eat or drink is part of the fun.

6.
Grab a Coffee at BÅDEN cafe
BÅDEN is a café built into an old boat. Its unique decor and outdoor seating with waterside views make it a great laid-back coffee break. See it in my Cozy Cafés guide.

7.
Rent a Boat and Sail the Canals Yourself
You can rent a small electric boat and cruise the canals at your own pace, with no boating license needed. It’s one of the most memorable ways to see the neighborhood, and rentals like GoBoat let you bring your own food and drink.

8.
Try Traditional Danish Smørrebrød at Christianshavn Færgecafé
For a taste of Danish tradition, stop by this cozy café for open-faced smørrebrød and other classic Danish meals. The boat-themed interior makes it worth a visit too.

9.
Visit Freetown Christiania
Just a short walk away, Christiania is unlike anywhere else in Copenhagen: a self-governing community known for street art, an alternative spirit and a laid-back energy. It also has small shops and restaurants with great food for visitors. Worth a wander even if you’re just curious.

10.
Walk to Dock Island and the Opera House
Finish your visit with a walk to Dock Island, right next to Christianshavn, where the iconic Copenhagen Opera House sits on the water.
